It’s fairly obvious that your environment can have an affect on your mood but when it comes to little ones, their surroundings can be a huge contributing factor when it comes to fostering creativity, imagination, etc.
While in a perfect world our children’s rooms would remain cohesive with the remainder of our home’s aesthetic, that just isn’t always entirely realistic. The feel of your little’s rooms might not tie in seamlessly with your specific taste but it’s important to allow them a level of creative freedom when making selections for their space.
In the case of the twelve year old’s room featured in this post, her one specific request was green. Lots of green.
The first element of the room we decided on was the wallcovering. We selected a green Thibaut grasscloth which allowed us to further expand on the green scheme from there. The next selection and perhaps the sweetest, was the Dogwood Leaf fabric by Miles Redd for Schumacher. We upholstered pillows, lampshades and the headboard in Dogwood Leaf and it made the entire room.
The other bed linens are monogrammed Matouk. We wanted to maintain a whimsical feel while still providing the feel of a “big girl room.” In finding that balance, we chose pieces that can carry through for years and won’t be outgrown when selecting more permanent fixtures such as the wallcovering, upholstery, etc. This is true for all of the Schumacher selections in the room. The drapery is Blake Poplin and trimmed in green Blake Poplin by Schumacher as well as the chair upholstery which is Schumacher’s check.
When it came time to select accessories, we incorporated special pieces already owned and passed down as well as and some fun touches here and there. The color and playfulness comes in through the photo frames, stuffed animals, books and other small pieces placed throughout the room.
When designing little one’s rooms it is all about the balance of allowing them input and a level of creative control while incorporating elements that will be sure to grow with them through each phase of growing up. Shop the pieces from this darling big girl room makeover below.
